Group Chat

Within the group so far, we have been generating ideas based upon the theme of TIME.
I now need to begin to move my ideas further by thinking closer with what I want to portray.

I feel like the photographs that I have been producing are showing a moment in time. I love this idea of producing a small moment visually. I need to begin to move my photos further through experimenting with photoshop, and layers. I feel like by combining these elements I can produce an interesting digital image that will inform my project further.

My group #unitwhy have been meeting up a few times a week to discuss 'where we are' in terms of ideas.  I've been finding this useful and also interesting to see how others are responding to the theme and how their ideas are progressing.

Sketchbook Work

Following the Marathon I produced some drawings from my initial photographs. This has helped me to think further about the line development and colour.

When I begin to edit my photos, I will be thinking about trying to bleach out the background and keep the interesting and expressive lines that show the movement over time.

Manchester Marathon

Yesterday I went to the Greater Manchester Marathon to photograph the event. I felt like this would be a good opportunity to use time lapse, to capture the athletes in motion.
These are some examples of the raw images I took.

I want to take these photos further using editing and layering skills on photoshop. I want to try to bleach out the background areas of the photos and just keep the exciting marks in of the movements.
I really like the colours and shapes that are created from the fast pace movements of the runners.
The fluidity of the images creates an interesting shape that I have been trying to replicate in my sketchbook.

Lincoln Harrison

Another member of my group who is also interested in time-lapse photography, suggested me to look at the photographer Lincoln Harrison.

Harrison spends nights at a time in the Australian Outback taking photographs of the star trails. A 15 hour exposure, leads to these amazing maps of the sky forming, when the eye wouldn't normally see this.
This reflects upon the photos that I have been taking, although, for not as long, the image that appears is not what our eye would of seen yet is a layering of thousands of images over a relatively short space of time.

Sketchbook Work

Here is a range of sketches that I did after the science museum trip based upon the time lapse photographs.
I enjoy making expressive marks and the time lapse photographs really let me let loose and make interesting marks.

Museum of Science and Industry Manchester

We decided to go on a group outing to the Museum of Science and Industry Manchester in the hope that this will give us all some more inspiration on the theme of time.

Whilst I was there, I began to sketch some of the machinery that's function related to time and measurements. I then started to realise that I was getting distracted by the amount of children running around: we had come in the middle of half term. I quickly thought, that this was actually interesting as the museum isn't normally as busy as this. And at this moment in time, the room was filled with kids running around playing with the activities everywhere.
I got my camera out and set it to take long exposure photographs of this moment. Capturing moments in time.

The first image I took was on a 30sec exposure in the main entrance.
I really like certain elements of this photograph, especially the bleached out areas and how it looks almost foggy inside.

I started to run with this idea, and took lot's more photographs inside and outside with varying exposures of my trip around the museum. Each photograph documents a moment in time that I saw moving around.

Outside the museum, there is an old fashioned steam engine which transports the public from one side of the museum to the other regularly. I feel like these photographs are my most successful of the day. I love the bleached out elements and how only certain parts of the image is revealed. This has intrigued me to take this idea further.

Group Tutorial

Following a tutorial today, we have all started to come to a group conclusion, that we want to begin moving away from documenting daily routine and 17:50.
We like the idea of time and felt that we can each begin to per sue individual ideas based upon the theme of TIME.

This is a broad topic, with a wide range of ideas that we can each begin to create outputs from, but still working together, bouncing of one and others ideas and helping each other with the theme.

I have chosen to think further into;

  • How can time be seen?
  • How can it be documented/recorded?
  • How can I capture time?

I plan to answer these questions through my work.

Easter Break

Over Easter, I continued to document my day through 17:50.
I have been resistant to abandon the idea, so was hoping that something would evolve from continuing with the theme.

I'm now starting to feel like I have all this information, but I don't know what to do with it. I'm struggling to see where this will lead me and what it could turn into.

I'm meeting up with my group to discuss ideas on tuesday, so I'm hoping that after a chat together I'll be clearer in my mind what this project will become.
