Boards

We have all been asked to produce 4 boards that reflect upon the work we have achieved over the summer. I want to produce a large scale textile piece that represents my memories. I want to produce work that will be viewed in a gallery space or public setting. I shall be using hand embroidery.

Initial Drawings

I have been drawing from my initial photographs and primary research in order to begin to document my journey. I have selected some of my favourite elements from my trip to draw. This includes Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki, Franz Josef Glacier in Franz Josef, Mirror Lakes in Te Anau and the Rurakuri Cave in Waitomo.

The shape of stalagmites and stalactites in the cave is fascinating and delicate to touch. I have been trying to keep my marks as loose as possible when drawing the cave to reflect upon its delicacy. I can see these marks evolving into 3D.

Another highlight is the Pancake Rocks. They are so named because the rock appears to be layered like a stack of pancakes. I want to use stitch to expand upon this drawing.

I can see lots of pattern and line work evolving from my drawings. I want to experiment with stitch and see how I can incorporate this line work through stitch and materials.

Third Year Starting Point

To inform my final year of study, I have chosen to use my experiences travelling  New Zealand as inspiration. I found it to be one of the most inspirational places I have ever been. The landscape and geology of the country is completely different to anything I have seen before. I spent three weeks travelling New Zealand, and found many areas of inspiration as geography interests me. I want to use the landforms and geology as my starting point.

I want to explore how I can use embroidery to reflect upon my experiences. I feel that using stitch will enhance and expand upon my previous knowledge and develop these images into large scale pieces of work for public spaces. Throughout this project I will be drawing upon personal experiences and memories and create something personal to document my experience.
