17:50

After the first meet up with my unit X group, I suggested an idea of thinking about 175 as a unit of time. They all seemed keen on the idea and we have all agreed for a week to document what we are each doing everyday at 17:50.

I chose to set an alarm on my phone and take a photo of whats in front of me at that time. I hope to continue this process and something will evolve from the idea. I discovered that most nights at this time I was eating or preparing dinner. Although my daily routine changes regularly, it seems that most of the time, I tend to be chilling out after the day, either getting ready for the night. 17:50 seems to be a time of the day when I'm preparing for the transition from day activities to night activities.

Dave Haslam

I decided to go the the lecture that Dave Haslam was giving. I'm a big fan of Manchester music, and giving his background thought it might be an interesting way to spend an hour.

I took a lot more that I expected from the lecture. The message that Mr Haslam was giving out was to be different, creative and unexpected. Avoid the mainstream and you'll find something more special.
This is something that I had been trying to achieve in my personal life as well as in my work. I'm exctied for the list of films, books, places to explore and hopefully find some further inspiration for the project.

"Marginal activity. It's marginal because it's new or pioneering.
Or because people have no money.
Or they just want something different because mainstream has no appeal"

Unit X Launch

Today is the launch of the new project, Unit X.
8 week collaborative project, investigation, team work.

I'm trying to gather my thoughts together and try to make sense of what is going on.
Everything is a bit of a blur to begin, but I'm sure it will make sense soon.

Working in a group isn't something that I am used to, I prefer to go at my own pace but I'm excited to work with others and bounce off of new people and learn through each other.
During the lecture we were given a few names of other collaborative successful groups of artists. Superflex is one whom I've researched in order to help gain some inspiration about how I can go about working within a successful group.

''SUPERFLEX is an artists' group founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and Bjørnstjerne Christiansen.

SUPERFLEX describe their projects as Tools. A tool is a model or proposal that can actively be used and further utilized and modified by the user.''

I've taken this quote from their website and feel like this is helping me to understand what I need to do to take and give to my group in order for us all to be successful.

175

Starting point. Translate through image, text, thoughts, ideas, information.
Its a multiple, is it a collection? Are objects involved?
Terms of value, money, time?
Distance, steps.

These are some of my first few thoughts based upon the idea of 175. What does this number mean to me? Where am I going to take it?
