Exhibition

Yesterday as a group we put up our work. It was a stressful day to say the least. My group were given a corner space with a window. This was perfect to hang my pieces. It also had two pipes running parallel across the window which was great because it meant that i could display my acetate in front of the tracing paper pieces. I spent a long time messing around with fishing wire, and in the end had to give up because my work wasn't sitting right in the window. In the end i used bulldog clips to weigh down the tracing paper and help it to hang straight. I am happy with the final outcome and that I managed to use a window to display my pieces. The light shining through brings out the colours and images much better than i had anticipated.

Final Tutorial

Today we had a final tutorial, in order to organise curating our work and finalising ideas.
I've produced a range of thought on how I can display my work, but I can't decide until I see the space and have a play. My group would like to have our work next to each other to show all our responses to the same theme.

We also decided to create an event for our exhibition to try and get as many people down to the Kraak Gallery as possible. Hopefully some more people will RSVP soon!

Playing with my Prints

I began to play around with layering the images on top of each other to create compositions and see how the images react with each other. I don't think i'll be able to discover the final composition until I've seen the space in which i will be working in. like the idea of layering the acetate of top and possibly  suspending it over the top.
I like the collection of these images here and how they work together in a line.

Final Prints

I printed my final edited images in colour on tracing paper and black and white on acetate. I want to play around with layering the images and figuring out a composition that involves all the images. I am struggling to do this however without knowing the space that I am going to be working within.

Because all of my images have been coloured throughout, i felt like if i had a monochrome layer then, the shapes would be more focused. I want the shapes and the colours to be of equal weighting. I went back into photoshop to convert the colours into black and white at the right levels to ensure that the light areas weren't lost. Simply photocopying the images in black and white meant that the lighter areas were lost.

Because these images are on acetate the light reflected off the paper when I took a photo. I quite like this effect as the lines fit in with the lines within my work.

Further Photoshop Development

I want to develop my photographs further in order to produce some quality images in which I can create something from. I want my theme of a 'moment in time' to be bold within the images. The message that I want to convey needs to stand out. I've never used photoshop before this project, so I am taking my time, thinking about each move and making sure that the final images I produce are the best they can be. I am pushing myself here, because I have always been afraid of using this software, but since I have begun, I am beginning to understand the software and what can be created from it.

Here is examples of the second stages of my images. I printed them out, because they will look different  on paper and it is important to see these differences and rectify them.

I feel like these photos are almost there but need a little more work. The negative space is important in bringing out the colour better. I want the pictures to at first glance look very abstract, yet on closer inspection, shapes and figures can be begun to be picked out.

Mariah Robertson

I've been beginning to think further about how to present my work next week in the Kraak Gallery. I've been researching into how I could present my images and also what I could do next with my images.

I really like this example of Mariah Robertson's piece entitled 9. She combines darkroom chemicals to obscure the images and layers them upon painting and sculpture techniques to create an interesting installation.

I like the idea of obscuring my images similar to Seba Kurtis, possibly using a random method and seeing what effects are produced.

Louise Bourgeois, Cell

My tutor suggested I look at Louise Bourgeois Cell series. This is a series of installations in which items have been created and incased within a box shape allowing the views to walk around and see the images at different angles. each different view changes the perspective of the image.

This is an idea that I feel I can incorporate within my work. Printing my final images on acetate will mean they can be layered and somehow displayed so that the eye can look through them all together and pick out a variety of shapes and colours that represent the moments in time. It makes the work 3D, something I am interested in.

Further Editing

From my initial experiment on photoshop, I want to enhance this software and really see what I can do with it. I have a vision of what I want my images to look like and I feel that through further experimentation, I can get there and have some quality images that show 'A Moment in Time'

I have enhance the colours on these with a view of printing them on tracing paper and acetate to bring out the qualities in each image

Embroidery Samples

As a way of developing further, I decided to go back to embroidery to help myself. This is something I feel comfortable doing and I enjoy.
A few weeks ago I attended a Hand Processes work shop, in which I spent most of the afternoon 'wasting time' by mindlessly embroidering onto some denim. I hadn't intended to attend the workshop but ended up being involved. I enjoy doing embroidery but at the time I felt like I should of been working on the project rather than nattering in the studio.
During the workshop I produced this piece, I documented it as a thought of wasting time, but since I have photographed the marathon, I feel like the lines reflected the shapes and movement of the runners.

I expanded upon this and created a range of samples using this idea of couching lines and reflected upon the lines and shapes from my photographs.

I like what I have produced,  but I am starting to feel like this is moving away from what I am trying to portray. I feel like these samples don't reflect my ideas as much as I would like them to. I think I felt like incorporating embroidery because I had to include textiles, but realistically, I don't need to do that. I am better off reverting to my original images, improving them and seeing where that will take me.

Photo Development

The photos that I took from the marathon had some really nice qualities to them, which I wanted to enhance and create new images with to inform my project further.

I've never used photoshop before and these were my first attempts at manipulating the images.

I layered three photos with these two images, I feel like this is too much and the colours are lost in the layers. I want to play around further just using two images and see what effects I can achieve whilst teaching myself how to use the software at the same time.
